Mary Catherine Kelly
Retired from service 2009.
Mary Kelly is a missionary with the Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church assigned as an education officer for the Free Wesleyan (Methodist) Schools in Tonga.
Mary is a resource person and teacher trainer and curriculum writer and program designer for teaching English as a foreign language (EFL). In addition she has written proposals and is the coordinator for UM VIM teams coming to Tongatapu. "We have been blessed through the last 6 years by the ministry of VIM teams who have impacted the school and community in unexpected ways by their dedication and love."
Prior to her current assignment, Ms. Kelly taught English as a foreign language at Anhui University in Hefei, Anhui, People's Republic of China through the Amity Foundation from 1994-1999. She also served as Director of Christian Education and Program Ministries of First United Methodist Church in Reseda, California from 1991-94.
Mary has a wide variety of teaching experiences, including years as an elementary school teacher, middle school teacher, substitute teacher, tutor, Sunday school and Bible class teacher both in Washington State and California. Ms. Kelly says she tries to be "as much as I can, the presence of Christ to the people I am called to be with. By acting in love and concern, by listening, by building trust and respect, God opens the doors of opportunity, even in China, where open evangelism is not permitted. Though Tonga is an openly Christian nation, the challenge is just as great as you become a model for the impressionable teenagers and their teachers. In Tonga you must be prepared for things not to go as we would normally expect. Meetings, classes and circumstances can change from morning to afternoon. You must be comfortable with living a very flexible life and not always knowing what today or tomorrow might bring.”
"The UMVIM teams come to help renovate and improve our classrooms and schools, as little or no money is spent on maintenance and repairs," Mary shares. "They have also brought much needed science and sports equipment and school supplies with them and donated them to the schools. Team members are hosted by school families and often form strong relationships with their families. The future plan is to have teams work at schools located in villages farther from the capital city of Nuku’alofa."
A native of Los Angeles, California, Ms. Kelly earned a BA degree in education from the University of California at Los Angeles. She completed graduate education courses at San Jose State, Cal State University at Northridge and Santa Cruz and Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington.
Mary served as a UMYF counselor, a lay delegate to the Pacific-Northwest Annual Conference from her local church, and as a choir member and soloist in church, school and community choirs.
Ms. Kelly is a member of the First United Methodist Church in Reseda, California (California-Pacific Annual Conference) and an associate member of the United Church of Ferndale, Washington (Pacific-Northwest Annual Conference). She lived in Ferndale for 20 years where she raised her two sons, Jeffrey and David.
