Charissa Shawcross
As director of the free clinic, Charissa seeks to provide healthcare to some of the 200,000 uninsured adutls in Detroit. Her call to serve in mission is evident as she has been a Stephen’s Ministry Leader for 10 years, and as a nurse practitioner she serves with the homeless and uninsured.
At the NOAH Project (Networking, Organizing, Advocating for the Health of the Homeless), Charissa provides physical assessments and referrals for the homeless individuals in the downtown area. She provides care with dignity to many individuals who have not had access to healthcare or insurance, many not having seen a doctor for years.
Born in Michigan, Chari attained her Master’s of Science/Nursing in Adult Health from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1993. She has worked as adjunct faculty at Henry Ford Community College, as a nurse practitioner in an advanced cardiovascular setting, Parish Nurse with Central United Methodist Church in Detroit, and nurse practitioner with the NOAH Project before beginning her service with the Joy-Southfield Health Clinic.
Chari and husband Scott are the parents of Cameron and Megan, and the family attends Newburg United Methodist Church in Livonia, Michigan. Chari’s parents, Ed and Colleen Bredow live in Daytona Beach, Florida.
