Alexander D. Devoid is a mission intern with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church, serving initially at Acción Médica Christiana in Nicaragua.
Mission interns serve half of their three-year terms in international assignments and half in their home countries. Alex was commissioned in August 2011.
Acción Médica Christiana was set up in 1984 by several young doctors providing pro bono health services to impoverished communities in Nicaragua's Caribbean areas. Today it has a multidisciplinary staff of health and development professionals. It has an integrated approach to health and wellness that stresses community empowerment, and puts a special emphasis on the health of women, children, and adolescents. Alex works as a facilitator for communications and visiting mission volunteers.
Alex is from Charlotte, North Carolina, where he is a member of the Dilworth United Methodist Church, a part of the Western North Carolina Annual Conference. His father is a pastor. Alex holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice from Pfeiffer University, Misenheimer, North Carolina. He can communicate in English and Spanish, and he plays guitar.
"My faith as a Christian was rooted in my mind and heart as a child," Alex says. "I have always had strong ties to the church, whether I acknowledged them or not. The lessons that I have from the church and from my faith have always been with me and will remain with me." His call to mission grows out of his faith and his understanding of the church.
Alex has a strong sense of the need for Christians to stand against injustice and apathy in cases where "resources are being depleted, healthcare is being denied, workers' rights are non-existent" as a result of greed and ignorance. Seeing the truth, he says, can lead to action because God is "in and around us, just beyond the facades, and can pull us into truth and give purpose to all our acts."
