Maribel's primary responsibility at El Mesias is to proclaim Christ to the Hispanic community in their own tongue, which is not merely by language but also by cultural identity, family transition and values, gender, and many other aspects. She also assists in providing educational information and opportunities, promotes leadership and growth within the Hispanic community, and works with those in the community to enable themselves to better provide for their families, as well as take an active part in the life of the community.
Born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, in 1963, Maribel attended the Universidad de Puerto Rico and graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. Before beginning her service in Louisiana, Maribel served in Brazil working with women and children from 1990 until 1992. She then returned to the U.S. and served with a women's organization in El Paso, Texas from 1992 until 1994. Her life in mission led Maribel back to Brazil from 1994 until 1998 to work in christian education.
Reflecting on her experiences in her work, Maribel shares, "Since we began in January 2000, we have had 250 students enrolled in ESL (English as a Second Language), and GED in Spanish. I see how God has moved in the ministry when a group of 15 people came to me and said they had passed the GED exam." Maribel also speaks of the Hispanic women who have passed the GED, "Now they too can fight against the marginalization that we see in the Hispanic community." Maribel believes God's mission is being carried out in her work by this passage, "Then the King will say, 'For sure, I tell you because you did it to the least of my brothers and sisters, you have done it to me.'"
Maribel is married to Esteban Calvo, and they are the parents of Micah, who arrived in August 2003. Maribel's parents, Rafael Mojica and Belen Molina live in Puerto Rico and are members of the Puerto Rico Methodist Church.
