Susie (Virginia Sue) Canafax has served as a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church since 1995.
She began serving in her current position as Mission Interpreter for the Southeastern Jurisdiction in the Spring of 2010.
Mission Interpreters are United Methodist missionaries assigned to serve in the U.S. jurisdictions to interpret the mission of the United Methodist Church through General Board of Global Ministries, particularly as it relates to missionaries and their support and mission projects through the Advance for Christ and his Church with annual conferences, districts and local churches.
From 2003 to 2009 Susie worked with the Office of Missionary Newsletters and Biographies based in Atlanta, GA. She was coordinator of the Missionary Wellness Program in Atlanta from 2000 to 2002, and has also served the missionary community as a part of the training team for new missionaries.
Susie was the nurse at Hillcrest School in Jos, Nigeria, from 1995-1999. She was responsible for the health care of students, faculty and Nigerian staff at the ecumenical school and related to children from ages 7-18 as well as adults.
Commenting on her past service and current position, Susie shares, "I have the opportunity to be in contact with much of the United Methodist mission community, and I am blessed to be able to facilitate their mission vocation. The United Methodist Church supports missionaries serving world-wide in amazing programs. Their stories need to be heard and I am grateful to be a part of process in communicating those stories."
Susie became interested in pursuing mission as a vocation after taking part in many mission activities through her local church and as a member of a VIM trip to Chile.
A native of central Texas, Susie attended Texas Wesleyan College (now University) in Fort Worth, TX, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. She later pursued her interest in the health sciences by earning a degree in nursing. She is a Registered Nurse and worked in the Emergency Department and ICU. Susie also worked in home health, as a campus nurse for Texas Wesleyan, and served three years in the United States Air Force.
Susie is a member of First United Methodist Church in Hurst, TX, in the Central Texas Annual Conference. She is the daughter of the Rev. Dr. Wilson Canafax, retired United Methodist clergy, and the late Mrs. Bernice H. Canafax.
