Romeo L. del Rosario
The Rev. Dr. Romeo L. del Rosario (Romy) is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church serving as country director of the United Methodist Mission in Cambodia. As country director, he is administrator and supervisor of mission programs/projects with a team of workers that includes Cambodians and nine missionaries from different parts of the world. During the past two years, Romy also served consecutively as superintendent of two districts encompassing four provinces.
The Cambodia Mission is part of the emerging Methodist Church of Cambodia. Since 1998 the Methodist Church in Singapore, the Korean Methodist Church, the United Methodist Church in France, Switzerland and the United States, and the World Federation of Chinese Methodist Churches have been cooperating and coordinating their mission efforts toward one autonomous Methodist Church in Cambodia by 2016.
At present, Cambodian Christians are engaged in evangelization ministries; programs with women, youth, and children; Christian education and discipleship; community health and food production; leadership training; community organizing; livelihood skills training; and church construction.
Despite a rich cultural heritage and the diverse gifts of its peoples, Cambodia has extensive poverty and hunger in its countryside, villages, and cities. Most Cambodian families were touched by the genocide that was perpetrated by Pol Pot's regime in the 1970s. The Killing Fields are a constant reminder of the terror that robbed Cambodia of its middle-aged population, its scientists, professionals, and artistic and spiritual leaders.
Romy also teaches at the Cambodian Methodist Bible School and chairs the theological education committee, which supervises the school and oversees the continuing theological training of pastors and church workers.
Immediately prior to his assignment to Cambodia, Romy was the officer-in-charge of Union Theological Seminary in the Philippines. He also taught courses in Christianity and Culture.
From 1992 to 2001, Romy served as a lecturer and then as dean of the Malay-speaking department of the Sabah Theological Seminary in Malaysia. He served in Jerusalem, West Bank, from 1989 to 1992 as liaison between the United Methodist Church and the Middle East Council of Churches. In this capacity, he represented the denomination in ecumenical circles and organizations involved in human freedom, justice, and peace issues. He assisted ministries receiving United Methodist support with proposal writing, fundraising, and other development activities. He also helped United Methodist visitors and residents in Jerusalem understand the crisis in the Middle East and the church’s participation in relief efforts.
Romy's missionary assignment from 1985 to 1988 was in Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa, where he taught at Theological Hall (now Sierra Leone Theological College) and directed its theological education by extension program. Before his appointment to West Africa, Romy was pastor of two churches in the California-Pacific Annual Conference, where he holds his clergy membership, and also served as a community developer with the Filipino Caucus.
Born in Manila, Philippines, Romy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Philippine Christian College (now Philippine Christian University); a Master of Divinity degree from Candler School of Theology, Atlanta, Georgia; and a Ph.D. in theological and religious studies, with a major in ecumenics and mission, from Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts.
