Stephen Paul Quigg
Stephen P. Quigg is a career missionary with the Board of Global Ministries (GBGM) of the United Methodist Church. After 20 years of aviation service in Africa, Stephen and his wife Gail are now based in the United States and travel widely in support of aviation ministries around the world.
Stephen is currently serving as the coordinator of the GBGM Aviation Resource Department. He is also on part-time loan to Mission Safety International (MSI), an ecumenical outreach to mission and church aviation programs, which includes our own UMC aviation ministries in Africa.
As a special assistant to the president of MSI, Steve works to help provide a variety of services including safety surveys, security, audits, safety seminars, accident investigations, continuing education events, and safety publications. All of these areas are designed to insure that flying is safe and secure. Because of the remoteness and lack of technical support, much of the flying on the mission field is conducted dangerously close to the “edge of the envelope”. MSI’s work helps bring the flying away from the edge and provides more success and a bit less tragedy in the lives of those who fly to serve the church of Jesus Christ.
Mr. Quigg earned a degree in Aviation and Electrical Engineering Technologies from LeTourneau College in Texas, completed advanced flight and maintenance training at Moody Aviation, studied cross-cultural ministries at Asbury Theological Seminary, and completed a computer science minor equivalent from Asbury College. He is also a commercial pilot, a certified flight instructor, and an Airframe and Powerplant mechanic.
Steve and his wife Gail began their missionary career in 1979 in the small village of Bambur, Nigeria, where they worked with Air Muri - the aviation branch of the Nigerian UMC. The Quiggs’ next assignment was in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) with “Wings of Caring” flight ministry of the Central Congo Annual Conference.
Even though Steve was a pilot and Director of Maintenance, with the civil unrest in DROC the Quiggs spent almost two years away from their base in Kananga and Steve became a “jack-of-all-trades”. He filled in across church and mission communities and helped out in various areas of maintenance, computer systems, preaching, plumbing and house repairs. Steve says of the circumstances of his last assignment, “The only job description that really counts is being ready to take on what the Lord sends your way.”
The Quiggs are the parents of two daughters, Heather and Kathy, both of whom were born in Nigeria.
