Gail Z. Quigg is a career missionary with the Board of Global Ministries (BGM) of The United Methodist Church, and is assigned, along with her husband, to church aviation ministries. After 20 years of aviation service in Africa, Gail and husband Steve are now based in the United States and travel widely in support of aviation ministries around the world.

Gail refers to herself as a “missionary without a portfolio” as she is involved in a wide variety of support ministries. She often travels with the Mission Safety International (MSI) team in order to share her perspective as a bush pilot’s wife (see biography of Stephen P. Quigg). Gail also helps lead a weekly community Bible study, mentors youth in the local church, visits home-bound folks, and performs administrative tasks for the local church as well as with MSI. Gail’s ministry in the past has been as a bookkeeper, hospitality hostess, radio operator, flight coordinator, Bible study teacher, teacher, and swimming instructor. She views her flexibility in mission as “vital” in order to meet needs as they present themselves.

Gail earned a degree in secondary education from Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky. She also completed course work at Asbury Theological Seminary in Bible teaching and cross-cultural lifestyles for families. Gail attributes most of her “practical education” to her 20 years of living and working in Africa.

The Quiggs began their missionary career in 1979 in the small village of Bambur, Nigeria, where they worked with Air Muri - the aviation branch of the Nigerian UMC. Their next assignment was with the in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) working with “Wings of Caring”, the flight ministry of the Central Congo Annual Conference.

Reflecting on her time in the Congo, which included two evacuations and being away from their base in Kananga for two years, Gail says, “The goal for the aviation program was to support the work and growth of the church. By filling in where needed, I could do my part in helping the system work smoothly. Regardless of the gifts that God gives us, there are ways to use those gifts in mission.”

Gail and Steve are the parents of two daughters, Heather and Kathy, both of whom were born in Nigeria.
