Roy May

Roy May is a United Methodist missionary assigned by the Board of Global Ministries along with his wife, Janet, to San Jose, Costa Rica. He teaches theology and ethics at the Latin American Biblical University (UBL), where he has been since 1987.

Rev. May collaborates with the Emaus Forum, an ecumenical organization dedicated to the defense of workers' rights on banana plantations, and care for the natural environment. He frequently serves as a guest preacher in local churches as well as a participant in a variety of organizations, particularly those involved with environmental and bioethical issues. Roy has written numerous magazine articles and several books, including the 1997 spiritual growth study Joshua and the Promised Land.

Roy graduated from Southern Methodist University (SMU) with a B.A. in history and government. An elder of the Southwest Texas Annual Conference, he earned theological degrees from the Perkins School of Theology (SMU) and the Chicago Theological Seminary. He received a PhD degree from the Free University in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Prior to this assignment, Roy worked 12 years on Bolivia with the Evangelical Methodist Church.

Roy is married to Janet W. May, also an elder, and they are parents of two adult sons: Roy Richard and Robert Andrew. Roy enjoys hiking and bird-watching, and especially being the ‘taster’ of Janet’s chocolate creations.
