Janet May

Janet May is a United Methodist missionary assigned by the Board of Global Ministries along with her husband, Roy, to San Jose, Costa Rica. She serves on the faculty of the Latin American Biblical University (UBL) where she has taught since 1987.

Rev. May teaches pastoral theology courses on gender issues and ministry; feminist theology; sexuality, and qualitative research and ministry. She is also the coordinator of UBL educational activities for HIV/AIDS prevention and the UBL representative to the Costa Rican Roman Catholic Church’s Commission on Ecumenism and Inter-religious Dialogue.

Janet is a guest preacher on a regular basis in local area churches, AIDS workshops, and on ecumenical, feminist theology, and sexuality issues. She is one of the co-coordinators of the Association of Women Theologians and Pastors in Latin America and the Caribbean. One very important goal for Janet in the coming years is the organization of an international master’s degree program in Women and Religion, in which she is taking the leadership.

A graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University, the University of Chicago, and Saint Paul School of Theology, Janet is an elder of the Southwest Texas Annual Conference. Prior to her assignment in Costa Rica, she served 12 years as a missionary in Bolivia.

She is married to Roy H. May, Jr., also an elder, and they are parents of two sons: Roy Richard and Robert Andrew. In her spare time, Janet is a chocolatier. She also enjoys hiking and birdwatching.
