Alexander (Alex) Larson is a missionary through the US-2 young adult program of the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church. Commissioned in August 2011, he is assigned to the United Methodist General Board of Church and Society in Washington, DC.
US-2 missionaries are young adults who serve two-year terms in the United States. Their work, often with the poor, integrates faith and justice as they learn from and walk with communities in their struggles to address systematic injustice and human suffering.
Alex is serving as a seminar program associate at the church agency that focuses on Christian social witness and advocacy, and includes a United Nations program. Seminar associates work with senior staff to design and facilitate seminaries covering the broad range of social issues of importance to The United Methodist Church and its members. The foundations for this study agenda are found in the United Methodist Social Principles.
A native of Brainerd, Minnesota, Alex has a Lutheran background and was extremely active in United Campus Ministries at North Dakota State University, Fargo, from which he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. He was co-president of the student ministry in his senior year. Alex held campus-based jobs during his undergraduate years.
Reflecting on his faith journey, Alex says, "I grew up in a middle-class family, but discovered that many people in my hometown were living in poverty. While going through high school, I began to realize that I wanted to help others to make their lives better. During college, this desire continued to grow…As a US-2, I hope to use my skills and training to help others improve their lives. I also plan to encourage others to give some of their time toward helping with social justice issues."
Alex has a particular interest in working with children.
