Nicholas L. Haigler is a mission intern with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church, serving initially as service and outreach coordinator at the L'viv United Methodist Church in L'viv, the hub city of Western Ukraine.
Mission interns serve half of their three-year terms in international assignments and half in their home countries. Nick was commissioned in August 2011.
The United Methodist church in L'viv serves a largely downtown population of young people. Its mission is "to unite people to God and to one another through faith in Jesus Christ." The congregation's roots are in youth outreach by missionaries to students. Nick has special responsibilities for mercy and justice ministries, to work with church members in seeking opportunities for social projects.
Nick is from Kannapolis, North Carolina, where he is a member of Unity United Methodist Church, a part of the Western North Carolina Annual Conference. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Christian mission from Pfeiffer University, Misenheimer, North Carolina, and worked as a camp counselor during summers while in college.
"I grew up in The United Methodist Church," Nick says, "but when I got into high school I questioned what it meant to be a Christian. In doing so I went to different churches, checked out different ministries, and talked to people with different faith backgrounds. My search…led me into ministry. As I prepared for college, I changed my major from youth ministry to Christian mission. Now, I have chosen to become a missionary because it is where I feel God's call to be."
Nick recalls that mission trips to assist after Hurricane Katrina and another trip to Nicaragua were instrumental in leading him into mission service. "I knew that God was calling me to be in mission, to be with people and build relationships."
