Rachel Michelle deBos
Rachel Michelle deBos is a missionary through the US-2 young adult program of the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church. Commissioned in August 2011, she is assigned to Project HEAL, a part of the South Florida Urban Ministry, related to the Florida Annual Conference.
US-2 missionaries are young adults who serve two-year terms in the United States. Their work, often with the poor, integrates faith and justice as they learn from and walk with communities in their struggles to address systematic injustice and human suffering.
Project HEAL responds to the emergency and long-term needs of persons and families in a four-county area of south Florida adversely affected by the Haitian earthquake of January 2010. Some of these persons were evacuated to the US as a result of the disaster, while others are seeking immigrant status for themselves or family members or face deportation issues. The case-management model of service is utilized.
Rachel both identifies families needing assistance and recruits volunteers to help with case management clinics. Much of this work will be done through Haitian congregations, and Rachel can communicate in French, and also in Spanish.
The daughter of a United Methodist parsonage family in the California-Pacific Annual Conference, Rachel deBos received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of La Verne in 2011. During her undergraduate years she worked as youth leader in the First United Methodist Church of Upland. In her senior year, she was president of the campus activities board at her university.
She has a special affinity for ministries with children and junior highs, and interest she was able to express both in her congregation and as a counselor for the Riverside District Camp. Rachel is confident in her capacity to care for human needs within the context of her commitment to God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
“I want to serve and to make a difference in people’s lives,” she says, “and do so through the presence of the Spirit and through the support of the church. This is very real and very powerful…I want to be faithful to the voice of God, and I strive to do so by allowing myself to serve.”
Speaking of US-2 service, she says, “I am very grateful and happy to have found a program that is able to help me grow as a person, and grow as a disciple of Christ.”
