The Rev. Luther J. Oconer is a United Methodist missionary currently appointed to the United Methodist Church of Sitka, Alaska in the Alaska Missionary Conference.
Sitka is a unified borough and city located on Baranof Island and the southern half of Chichagof Island in the "panhandle" of Alaska, directly facing the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean.
Luther Oconer is a native of the Philippines, a member of the Pampanga Annual Conference in the Philippines Central Conference. He has been in Sitka since July 2009, having earlier served pastorates in the Philippines prior to several years of theological studies at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey.
Luther's Christian journey and call to mission was influenced by his second-generation United Methodist family, and his experience in the church children's ministry and the United Methodist Youth Fellowship. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from Mapúa Institute of Technology in 1993, Luther worked in telecommunications. He felt a strong call to ministry in 1997 and was appointed to serve small rural churches while he attended Wesley Divinity School in Cabanatuan.
After receiving the Master of Divinity degree from Wesley, Luther spent six years at Drew, earning both Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees.
He says that his work in Sitka has helped him to "rediscover my love for pastoral ministry. Now I can preach again Sunday after Sunday and be in ministry with people." He expresses thanksgiving that in 1997 he "took the leap of faith" by responding to God's call to ministry.
Luther is married to Marion Oconer. The couple has one child, Ilana, born in 2007.
