Suzanne Lynn Pohli
Suzanne Pohli is an associate in mission service at the Red Bird Mission, Beverly, Kentucky, where she is coordinator of ministries with women and children.
Red Bird Mission is part of the Red Bird Missionary Conference in the southeastern corner of Kentucky. It was organized in 1921 by the Evangelical Church, a predecessor of The United Methodist Church. Red Bird Mission engages in education, health and wellness, economic development, and community outreach.
Suzanne's ministry involves direct involvement with families and youth, many of whom have had limited access to education, nurturing, and spiritual resources. Many of the people of the region, Suzanne says, live in "isolation, extreme poverty, and are in need of God's hope and promises."
A maternal health-mentoring program for expectant mothers follows a family with monthly visits from pregnancy to the child's third year. Another child development ministry is for youngsters three to four years old. Suzanne also coordinates a summer youth program for 40 to 60 youth between the ages of 6 and 15, and has responsibility for a group of summer interns.
The caring, sensitive approach of working alongside families has positive results. People "quit smoking, ask for GED materials, and change their eating habits," she says. One of Suzanne's objectives is for people to see God through her.
She grew up The United Methodist Church in Chillicothe, Ohio. Her husband, Robert Pohli first attended a work camp at Red Bird in 1998 and felt a call to serve there in mission. After 12 years of prayer, the dream was realized. From 1991 through 2008, Suzanne and Bob lived in the Wilmington, Delaware area, where Suzanne worked for six years as youth director of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
Suzanne received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Morehead State University, Morehead, Kentucky. She and Bob are the parents of three grown children, Michael, Heather, and Jennifer, and have two grandchildren.
