Joseph Hopkins is a missionary through the US-2 young adult program of the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church. Commissioned in October 2010, he is assigned to Interfaith Worker Justice in Chicago, Illinois.
Interfaith Worker Justice strives to build coalitions of faith communities, labor unions, students and professors, and community organizations to promote workers' rights. Joe’s role at IWJ is to help coordinate the organization's national network of workers' centers. He is excited to engage people from as many different groups and backgrounds as possible in a continuing, active dialogue of hope, peace, and love.
Joe Hopkins grew up in rural central Pennsylvania, attending high school in Duncannon. His church membership is in the Wesley United Methodist Church in Marysville in the Susquehanna Conference. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bucknell University, Lewisburg, where he majored in psychology and Spanish. He was active in a variety of student Christian organizations during his college years.
He also spent six months in Argentina, exploring the country, himself, and his Christian commitment. Joe returned to school with a renewed commitment to justice and a determination to work on behalf of immigrants and the oppressed.
