Jamila Hunter is a missionary through the US-2 young adult program of the General Board of Global Ministries. Commissioned in October 2010, she is assigned to Fountain of Youth in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The Fountains of Youth Foundation prepares young people from ages 16 to 25 for gainful employment and civic engagement. Students come primarily from East New Orleans. The program focuses on community organizing, career development, and personal exploration. Partners include the Louisiana Conference of The United Methodist Church, Cornerstone United Methodist Church, the Louisiana Recovery School District, Communities in Schools, and Sarah T. Reed High School. Jamila works as a community organizer, assisting in identifying, recruiting, and training volunteers for the organizing component of the program.
Jamila is a native of Brooklyn, New York, where she is a member of the Vanderveer Park United Methodist Church. She earned a degree in cultural and interdisciplinary studies, with emphases on media arts and social justice, from Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio. She enjoys working in film and television production, and especially likes the collaboration, and teamwork, required to make a quality media product. She believes in the capacity of all people to work together in order to contribute and grow. She sees the arts as a means of promoting social justice and change in the world.
"My faith journey is one that continues to create new questions and changes in my life every day," Jamila says. "I often find myself reflecting on what is real and true, and because my foundations are in The United Methodist Church, the reflections are guided by teachings on love, honesty, compassion, and belief in God."
Jamila has worked as a volunteer in many cultural and social causes in her Brooklyn community, including Parents for Peace and a local AIDS Walk.
Jamila Hunter is available for Covenant Relationship support in West Ohio Annual Conference .
