The Settlement’s goal is to meet basic needs in Appalachia. Home building and repair, a food bank, child care, senior care, an after school literacy program, prenatal and infant care and community aid are the primary ministries offered at Frakes. Home building and repair is offered through White Oak. Mark sees his ministry as director as helping provide the Settlement staff with the resources necessary to serve Christ in impoverished, rural communities.
Born in Tacoma, WA, Mark served 23 years in the United States Air Force as a communications officer. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science from Troy State University in AL, and a Master of Arts in Business Organization Management from La Verne University in Alaska.
Reflecting on his call to serve in mission as a vocation, Mark shares, ”Once I decided to retire from the Air Force, I asked God to use me in missions. I have been on short mission trips and volunteered in local missions but I really didn’t know what full time ministry would be like. My wife and I prayed that God would open a door to service.”
Mark feels his years in the Air Force gave him opportunities to gain leadership and management experience though formal and on-the-job training – experiences he uses everyday. ”I’ve also been preparing through my faith walk. I’ve been a part of men’s study groups and Sunday school classes that have challenged me to participate in ministry rather than be a spectator. I like the scripture from Philippians 1:6 – ‘I am sure of this, that He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus’.”
Mark and wife Linda are the parents of one son and two daughters.
