A Church and Community Worker (CCW) with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church, Steve Claris serves with the United Methodist Choctaw Mission in Mississippi, in community outreach and leadership development.
Raised in the United Methodist tradition, Steve did not make a commitment to Christ until age 27. He then strived to live out his faith through his work and served in the church as opportunities occurred. After marrying in 1983, Steve and his wife Karen continued to experience spiritual growth by leading Disciple Bible studies and serving through the Walk to Emmaus program. Karen’s life and ministry ended in 2003 after a two-year battle with cancer. ”That time of struggle was also a time when we experienced God’s grace and comfort in many unexpected ways.”
Steve shares his call to mission: ” I had never thought of personally being a missioner, but a program at church led to a short-term project at Bethlehem Bible College in Israel. Our youth pastor reminded me of my commitment to drive a van to Hinton [Rural Life Center] in Haysville, NC. Then a friend told me to go on our district project to Guatemala. In 2006 I went to Brazil with a prayer and healing project. The global nature of my mission experience was preparing me for a cross-cultural ministry with the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.”
Attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Steve earned his B.A. degree in Communications. Prior to entering ministry with Global Ministries in October 2008, Steve worked as a news photographer and videographer in North Carolina and Virginia.
Steve is a member of Bonsack UMC in the Virginia Annual Conference.
