Dakin Cook is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church currently serving as mission financial auditor for South America. Prior to that assignment he was a regional executive for Latin America in the offices of the General Board of Global Ministries, and earlier was a missionary in Bolivia.
As mission finance auditor, Mr. Cook works with church leaders, mission partners and institutions, and Global Ministries' personnel in ensuring that mission funds are distributed and used in appropriate ways. His territory includes countries throughout the continent.
Dakin was born in New Haven, Connecticut and moved to New Delhi, India with his parents when he was 12 years old. During this time, he attended an American International School and spent a month each summer doing volunteer work with various projects sponsored by the National Christian Council of India. The projects were different each year and included famine relief, flood relief, vaccination programs, and refugee resettlement programs. During the school year, he worked with a team of volunteer high school students to help build and maintain a leper colony for a period of five years.
"My parents have always been the greatest influence and examples in my life," Dakin says. "Their entire lives were involved in mission recruitment and service. It was their support, advice, and prayers that helped me make the commitment to live out a life of faith as a missionary."
Dakin holds an associate degree in nursing from Columbia State Community College in Columbia, Tennessee. In 1988, he completed studies at the University of Tennessee in Nashville in the critical care education unit. From 1987 to 1990, Dakin was involved in nursing at Southern Hills Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, and from 1990 to 1993, he served as a volunteer with the Evangelical Methodist Church in Bolivia.
Dakin served as a Global Ministries missionary in Bolivia from 1993 to 2007 working in the office of promotion of the Evangelical Methodist Church in Bolivia. He also had area financial responsibilities in those years. His work in the office of promotion included fundraising for the Advance, communications, and coordination of long- and short-term volunteers in Bolivia.
Dakin is married to Sara Flores, a native of Bolivia, who is also a missionary.
