Eugene O. Muembo, M.D., is a missionary with the Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church serving in Sierra Leone, West Africa, as a physician with the United Methodist Health & Maternity Center in Kissy. Dr. Muembo has been with the Kissy Center since 2001, first as a Missioner of Hope (MOH) until March of 2005, and now as a GBGM missionary.

Sharing thoughts on Kissy Health Center Dr. Muembo asks: “Do you know that Kissy Health Center started with three patients a day? Today it can boast to have 60-70 or more patients daily. Before long we expect to have a surgical theatre and a surgical ward”. Since that observation, the Kissy Hospital has completed construction of a new operating theatre and surgical ward, a children's ward, and the number of patients has increased substantially. Dr. Muembo’s responsibilities include seeing patients in the clinic and hospital, performing general surgery, assisting in obstetrics and gynecology, and serving as acting medical director of the health center when the Medical Director travels.

Native to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Dr. Muembo received his medical education from the Medical School in Kinshasa, and began his medical career at Samuteb Memorial Hospital in Kapanga. He supervised the nursing school at Kapanga as well as community health care in the district, and later became acting medical director of the hospital.

When civil unrest in Katanga province worsened in the mid 90’s, Dr. Muembo and his family traveled to Lubumbashi, DROC, and then to Bukavu in Zaire to work with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) as that agency ministered to the refugees from the Rwandan civil war who had fled to Eastern Zaire.

While he was in the U.S for training in obstetrics, Dr. Muembo’s family fled from Bukavu to Nairobi, Kenya due to warring factions in Zaire. Four weeks in the U.S. for Dr. Muembo became three months, and communication with his family was non-existent. He was ultimately able to reunite with his family in Nairobi, and worked at Kenyata Hospital before being posted to the hospital in Maua. The destruction of the U.S. embassy in Nairobi in 1998 led the Kenyan leaders to order all refugees from their jobs and into refugee camps, and once again the Muembo family found themselves ministering to others in need as they too were once again displaced.

Dr. Muembo was selected as a Missioner of Hope, a program begun by the General Board of Global Ministries, and attended training in Mindolo, Zambia in 1999. Dr. Muembo and his family were posted to Freetown in Sierra Leone, however the war there prevented the Muembo’s from entering until 2001, and Dr. Muembo continued his work at Maua Hospital in Kenya whilst waiting.

Dr. Muembo is a key member of the medical team, and together with his wife Rachel, also a GBGM missionary, is providing a vital service to the community of Kissy. Eugene and Rachel are the parents of four children: Alberta, Jessica, Dany, and Elisha, and have also cared for children orphaned by the war in Sierra Leone.
