Mary B. Gladstone-Highland is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church serving as a Church and Community Worker with the Utica Urban Ministry in Utica, New York.
Utica Urban Ministry, established in 2007 and housed at Asbury United Methodist Church, offers a range of educational enrichment opportunities for low-income children and families. All of its programs cover the four focus areas of The United Methodist Church: congregational development, leadership development, health, and ministry with the poor. Congregations are developed through opportunities in mission, healthy meals are offered each week for children, and young adults from the community are given leadership roles. All of those served live below the poverty line. The ministry always seeks to coordinate rather than duplicate existing services.
Mary previously worked with the Deaf Shalom Zone in the Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference—two years as a US-2 missionary and another three as a Church and Community Worker.
Born into a strongly United Methodist family in Detroit, Mary says that her "call to mission was a slow nudge," which developed through her high school and college years. Her knowledge of American Sign Language led her toward ministry with the deaf. Her five years at the Deaf Shalom Zone led to a firm commitment to devote her life to God's mission.
Assigned to Utica in July 2010, Mary looks forward to further development of her skills as she works with that community. "Utica Urban Ministry wants to be a Christian presence to the community, and also hopes that the community will recognize the mission and Asbury Church as places of safety and fun."
Mary earned her degree from Western Michigan University in English and Nonprofit Administration in 2005. During her university years, she worked writing grants, implemented fundraising plans, served as a peer minister for the Wesley Foundation, and planned and worked with summer camps for under-served children.
Mary's father, David, and her brother are United Methodist clergy, as was her late mother, Terry. She is married to Andrew Gladstone-Highland, a former Church and Community Worker.
