Russia Initiative Newsletter

This occasional newsletter gives up-to-date information about the Russia Initiative, which includes the countries of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova.

October 2011, Part 2

To friends and participants of the Russia Initiative, a mission program of the General Board of Global Ministries, The United Methodist Church:

Dear Friends,

This newsletter brings to you the announcement of the new Russia Initiative Partnership Coordinator from Patrick Friday, Director of In Mission Together, Global Ministries:

It is a joy to announce the assignment of David McLaurin as the new In Mission Together Partnership Coordinator for the Russia Initiative, effective January 1, 2012. Within the GBGM structure, he will relate to the In Mission Together Partnership Development office. While David will have similar responsibilities as Jim Athearn, his focus will be more specifically on partnership development. As you know, the establishment of the Eurasia UMC has progressed significantly over the past twenty years as evidenced by the new Eurasian Roadmap. This has enabled the church leaders to take ownership for their operations in a way that was not possible before. They are now able to assume some of Jim Athearn's previous responsibilities, but still need our support through David's leadership with the IMT partnership program.

David brings to this position many gifts as a mission-minded church leader. He knows well the structure of the United Methodist Church and has been active in the Russia Initiative for many years. We welcome his leadership in this role and look forward to the steps we will take together with our brothers and sisters in Christ in Eurasia in the years ahead.

Blessings in Christ,

Rev. Patrick Friday
Director of In Mission Together
General Board of Global Ministries

Of additional interest, new missionaries have been commissioned for service in Eurasia: see the articles including Eumin and Prumeh Kim who will be sent to Kazakhstan, and Michael Airgood, who will be sent to L'viv, Ukraine and will work with missionaries David and Shannon Goran already there.
