United Nations
The Church Center for the United Nations is a faith-based witness for peace across the street from the United Nations. The Methodist Church built the 12-story facility at 1st Avenue and East 44th Street in 1963. United Methodist Women's national administrative body, the Women's Division, assumed ownership of the building in 1984. The building provides access to the United Nations to faith communities and non-governmental organizations working for human rights and peace.
United Methodist Women's work at the center includes:
- The United Methodist Office for the United Nations, a joint ministry of the Women's Division and the United Methodist General Board of Church and Society offering a ministry of presence and education. Both groups are non-governmental organizations with consultative status within the UN Economic and Social Council.
- The Seminar Program on National and International Affairs offers educational workshops that emphasize the connection between Christian faith and social practice through justice education.
- Hospitality. With Space for offices, luncheons and other meetings, the center is a ministry of hospitality to non-governmental organizations working for peace and justice, and to many disenfranchised peoples trying to make their voices heard at the United Nations.
