Immigrant Rights
The biblical mandate to the faithful to “welcome the stranger in your midst” has long been the foundation of the United Methodist Church’s policy statements and outreach to immigrant communities in the United States. United Methodist Women likewise seeks to welcome and advocate for immigrants to the country.United Methodist Women work in this area includes:
- advocacy for legislation supporting the rights of immigrants such as reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act protecting undocumented immigrant victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking;
- assistance for immigrant victims of Hurricane Katrina;
- participation in coalition efforts to stop human trafficking.
Immigration Study and Action Resources
At its April 2006 meeting, the Women's Division Board of Directors approved a recommendation for the development of an Initiative on Immigrant and Refugee Rights.
