United Methodist Women member Pamela Stewart describes her involvement in Emma’s Circle, a circle for girls 7-17 years old.

I’ve been a member of United Methodist Women for three years. I joined after Betty Lopez joined our church. Betty had been in other United Methodist churches before, but none of them had a United Methodist Women unit. Ours did, and she joined.

She came up with the idea of a United Methodist Women group for young girls and began to corral them. I love to work with kids. I expressed an interest in helping her, and she took me up on it.

That’s how Emma’s Circle started. It’s for girls 7-17 years old. One of our first successes was taking more than 25 girls to School of Christian Mission.

When we went to School of Christian Mission, I sat in a room with all of these wonderful, dynamic women who had dedicated their lives to Christian mission through United Methodist Women and done many wonderful things. I knew I wanted to be a United Methodist Women member. I was so impressed with the faith of these women.

That year the mission study was Palestine-Israel. I was deeply affected by that study.

Today I’m president of our unit. We have four circles, counting Emma’s Circle. One of my goals this year is to bring all of our circles together for one meeting. We have a difficult time getting people to attend total unit meetings. Our leaders put a lot of work into meetings.

Being a United Methodist Women member has helped me mature in my faith and helped me understand that if one, two, 20 or however many people are in a group, together, we can make a difference. I’ve seen that in the church and experienced it in the work of United Methodist Women.
