Responsively Yours: New Every Morning

By Harriett J. Olson

Thanks be to God for the inexhaustible love shed abroad throughout the whole creation! Constantly new, and constantly renewing.

In many other areas of life, we humans like a bit of repetition. We resist when traffic is rerouted, when the social networking site Facebook changes its webpage format, or when our local movie theater changes the show times. Of course, not all changes are good, but some are.

Welcome to the new format of response magazine. You’ll notice United Methodist Women’s new logo and tagline on the cover. “Faith • Hope • Love in Action” are the core values of United Methodist Women. As you can see throughout this issue, stories of Faith • Hope • Love in Action abound! We’re adding this phrase to our logo to communicate to others what we are about, and it might remind United Methodist Women members, too.

We have a vision that will focus our work and challenge us into our future: United Methodist Women is turning faith, hope and love into action for women, children and youth around the world.

We are choosing this point in time as an opportunity to look back and appreciate what has preceded us and to claim our future. This summer’s new United Methodist Women mission study on mission and evangelism, Joy to the World!: Mission in the Age of Global Christianity, is a great place to get some of that broader perspective. At the same time, we’ve surveyed the world around us. That has meant looking at other organizations and at trends related to women and girls. It has also entailed talking with United Methodist Women members and others who have a stake in our ability to be who and what God is calling us to be.

We have a vision that will focus our work and challenge us into our future: United Methodist Women is turning faith, hope and love into action for women, children and youth around the world.

To do this, we will be working in five interconnected areas:

  • Spiritual growth that leads to putting faith into action;
  • Organizational growth focused on members;
  • Work for justice through compassionate service and advocacy;
  • Leadership development among women and girls around the world;
  • Mission education for the transformation of the world.

I look forward to working together with all the members and leaders of United Methodist Women to make our vision a reality and further strengthen the work of our foremothers from the past 140 years. So many people are rooting for United Methodist Women to be all that we can be! It’s very exciting and a time of immense possibility. Aren’t you glad we’re in it together?
