Palate for Peace: Palestinian Women by Glory E. Dharmaraj
09/19/2013 Palestinian women make up almost 50% of Palestinian population (1.03 men/woman). Palestinian women make up 53.1% of secondary and 54.4% of tertiary education. But female employment does not correlate with the educational achievements of women. Especially on the West Bank, unemployment is high among women. Unemployment in the West Bank stood at 17.8% in 2009 with 17.6% for males and 18.8% for females. Unemployment among women in the West Bank is particularly high.

09/18/2013 While attending the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations through United Methodist Women, Dr. Renee Campbell, the Executive Director of Wesley House Community Services in Louisville, KY learned from international delegate Suzuyo Takazato from Japan of the years of rapes and violence being imposed on the women of Okinawa, Japan by US service members. With that, she started a T-Shirt campaign to give voice and tribute to those women and their families.

Over 60 United Methodist Women from the Florida conference joined CIW members and allies in a prayer vigil at the Southgate Publix in Lakeland on July 13, 2013.

09/14/2013 Grassroots International uses United Methodist Women Mission Giving funds for leadership and economic development of Palestinian women. According to their Giving Coordinator, “Food is one of the key weapons being used to subjugate the Palestinian people; heavily subsidized, imported food and food aid undermines Palestine’s farming economy and creates food dependence.” The project on Women’s Empowerment and Food Sovereignty offers a different path for low-income Palestinian rural women.

United Methodist Women are daily stepping up to the plate to be the Peacemakers we were created to be in such a warring, violent world.
