United Methodist Women Takes New York Subway Ad to Washington Metro

Ad Lists 23 Other Interfaith Coalition Partners

By Leigh Rogers

Following their ads posted in the New York City subway challenging hate speech, United Methodist Women will co-sponsor more counter ads, this time in Washington, DC’s Metro stations, with 23 other faith organizations.

The ads in the Metro will read, “Hate speech is not civilized. Support peace in word and deed,” and include a list of the supporting organizations, in particular members of the Shoulder-to-Shoulder campaign. They will be up for three weeks.

United Methodist Women and their coalition partners are responding to ads posted in San Francisco, New York, and now Washington, DC transit stations calling Muslims “savages.”

Press Conference, October 15, 2012

A press conference is set for Monday, October 15, 2012 at 10 AM in front of the United Methodist building in Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, the day the counter ads are unveiled in the Metro.

On why it was important to post counter ads in New York, and now Washington, General Secretary of United Methodist Women Harriett Olson said, “We needed to be present with a counter voice, we need to stand for the work of peace, and to say that free speech should not be used recklessly or in an inflammatory way.”

The interfaith coalition’s ads will hang in 3 Metro stations: Glenmont, Takoma Park, and Woodley Park. Glenmont and Takoma Park are also where Pamela Gellar’s hate ads are posted.
