Women's Division deputy general secretary Jan Love last week signed onto an interfaith plea for A Season of Prayer for Peace in the Middle East. Ms. Love joined a growing list of more than 39 leaders of Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist and other communions and organizations calling on members of their respective communities to engage in prayer and local interfaith events of witness for peace in the Middle East in the wake of increased hostilities in the region.
"Our hearts break, our minds ache and our spirits explode with anguish over the escalating violence in the Middle East," Ms. Love said. "While we witness daily the death, destruction and suffering in the region, we remember the hope, life and peace to which we are called as those who know the power of the resurrected Christ.
"We bring our prayer as Christians, together with others from different faith traditions, that all who earnestly seek peace with justice will find a way forward to immediately end hostilities and find a just, lasting and secure peace."
The prayer campaign, coordinated by the National Council of Churches USA, includes a website, www.seasonofprayer.org, where a description of the initiative along with prayers, litanies, scripture texts, announcements and other prayer resources from participating communions are posted and shared.
Also on the website is a brief joint message from the signers that ends with a call for faithful people to "Pray like everything depends on God. Work like everything depends on you."
