Climate Justice

A Seminar for Young Women

United Methodist Women is seeking applications from women ages 18-30 to be participants in a seminar on climate justice. The seminar will take place at the Wesley Center in Tokyo, Japan, February 14-24, 2013.

This seminar will bring young (ages 18-30) women from Japan, Korea, China and the United States together to focus on climate justice. We will explore the ethic of creation care, ways that climate change is affecting peoples’ lives and international efforts to address it. We will also consider how our faith calls us to respond. The seminar will be held at the Wesley Center in Tokyo, Japan. Participants will:

  • Engage in biblical reflection and spiritual practices that deepen a sense of connectedness with others and to Creation.
  • Download the brochure and application for more information.
    Application deadline November 1, 2012.
  • Meet with international nongovernmental organizations, grass-roots organizers and experts.
  • Visit organizations that are working to address climate justice.
  • Develop relationships with peers from other countries.
  • Expand leadership skills.

Participants are expected to raise $300 per person for this event. This will help cover travel and housing costs. This money can be raised through each participant’s community of support, including church, friends and relatives and organizations in which the participant is involved. Additional expenses beyond the $300 are graciously underwritten by the Wesley Center, Scranton Center for Women’s Leadership and United Methodist Women National Office.

Participants will stay at the Wesley Center and related apartments in Tokyo, Japan. The apartments have comfortable double occupancy
rooms, private baths and a kitchenette.

Things to Consider

Participants will depart for Tokyo on Thursday, February 14 and return to the United States on Sunday February 24. We ask that participants be present and available for the entirety of the event as sessions will build on one another. Given the length of travel time, inevitable jet lag and rigorous program schedule, U.S.- based participants should be prepared for a physically demanding experience. All participants will have good working knowledge of English.

Each person comes with her own distinct ways of seeing the world, experiences, expectations and own ways of expressing one’s spirituality. The seminar is designed to stimulate cross-cultural learning. Participants will be selected in part to contribute to the diversity of the group. In order to fully benefit from the learning opportunities and to be open to the grace of God present in community, it will be important for all participants to come with an open mind and open heart—prepared at times to be challenged by guest presenters and/or other participants. A commitment to learning, listening and speaking with compassion is essential.
