Organize a Public Witness for Immigrant Rights on May 1
We are inviting all United Methodist Women to organize local public witness events for immigrant rights in your communities on May 1. These events will link to a faith-based march and vigil for immigrant rights at Assembly 2010 in St. Louis.
If you want to participate in our actions for immigrant rights but are unable to be physically present at Assembly in St. Louis, you can participate by organizing similar public witness events in your own communities. Events may include:
- A silent prayer vigil at your church
- A rally at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in your area
- A vigil at city hall
- Hosting an educational event
We encourage you to come up with your own ideas.
Use the toolkit (PDF, 384 KB) to plan and implement your public witness for immigration event. The toolkit includes:
- An event planning checklist
- Sample vigil programs
- A media outreach guide
If you plan to host a public witness on May 1 or need help organizing one, please contact Cindy Johnson at firstname.lastname@example.org or 956-459-4006.
Please share your plans with us! Go to our new social networking community on immigration and tell us what you are planning for May 1.
Add your event to an interactive map by providing the event's address. Be sure to include the city and state.
