Ubuntu Day of Service

Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu: A person is a person through other persons.—South African proverb

Ubuntu is a unique word, a concept, a worldview that captures the very essence what it is to be human. A Zulu phrase, Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu says, “I am only because we are, and since we are, therefore I am.” It recognizes each human being as part of a community. Above all, it is a gathering of God’s people to celebrate God-with-us, Immanuel, who moves us to action on behalf of neighbor. Ubuntu is a celebration of being in community with people as mission.

Ubuntu Day of Service, a pre-conference experience Thursday April 24, is designed to celebrate mission as relational. Field trips offer opportunities to experience how communities are impacted by persons and systems and how people are making a difference.

Different types of service opportunities are available:

  • Administration: Filing, envelope stuffing, etc.
  • Light work: Food bank help, packing, sorting items.
  • Heavier work: Yard work, painting, beautification projects, gardening.
  • Work with social justice organizations.
  • Kit building at the Kentucky Convention Center.

Indicate your first, second, and third choices on the online registration form. Due to limited space, all selections are based on a first come, first serve basis.

Workshops

New for Assembly 2014: No need to preregister for workshops! You can you choose your workshops on the day they’re offered—and even change your mind! Should a new topic spark your interest or you want to go deeper into an issue you learned about the day before, you’ll have flexibility and choice with the open workshop format. No matter how you design your own experience, you will be connecting with women from all over the world who share your commitment to work on behalf of women, children and youth.

Workshops, Experience Hall events, town halls and plenary sessions will be posted on the Assembly 2014 website leading up to the event and at the event itself. Workshops will have capacity limits, so make sure to arrive early and save your spot!

LIMITLESS Reunion & Young Women Gatherings

We will host a Limitless reunion for the young women and mentor teams from each conference who attended the Limitless event at Duke University in August 2012 and have continued their work to involve young women. We will be offering opportunities for new young women to join them throughout Assembly.
