United Methodist Women ListServ
What is a listserv?
A listserv is an electronic mailing list. It provides a way for users to participate in discussions or receive information on designated topics. The software that manages or distributes these mailing lists to all of the subscribers is normally called a "listserver."
How will United Methodist Women use the listserv?
The Women's Division and United Methodist Women participants will designate discussion topics on a regular basis. They may range from United Methodist Women membership topics, to social action topics, to Christian social responsibility topics. Those who sign up to participate in the listserv will receive e-mail messages from the listserv.
How it works: one list member sends a message to one e-mail address--that of the listserv-- then the listserv sends that single message to everyone on the list so all can see it. If a person responds to a message that the listserv sent, then everyone receives a copy of that reply, even though the person responded to just one message. Listservs are a type of online forum, conference, or interest group.
We see this as an opportunity to involve United Methodist Women, and those who are interested in United Methodist Women, in on-going discussions on issues important to them. It's a way of bringing about new viewpoints and looking at many perspectives in our diverse community.
Are there rules to the listserv?
- The listserv of United Methodist Women is to be used to help fulfill the Purpose of the organization: to know God and experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission.
- Dialogue, prayers, and ideas related to the programs and purpose of the organization are encouraged. Language and e-mails should be respectful of all participants (creating a non-threatening environment and supportive community), while recognizing that there may be differences in ideas and beliefs.
- Please only e-mail original messages. Do not forward messages or files, which may contain viruses.
- Please respond to messages only if you have another idea or thought. Do not send short confirmations/responses, messages to one person in particular, or one-word answers. These just clog up every participants' mail boxes.
Any person not deemed to be adhering to the purpose of the listserv may be removed at any time.
How do I sign up?
If you would like to be involved in the listserv, send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org with your name, your address, your church name, and your UMW unit if you belong. We will sign you up and send you more information on what you need to do to participate in the listserv. Once you're submitted to the listserv, send an introduction to yourself, a subject you'd like to discuss, or join in with the discussion.
