Background
In 2006 the Women's Division, United Methodist Women's national policymaking body, challenged members to engage an immigrant and refugee rights mission initiative by:
- • Examining changes in demographic and economic realities in their communities and in United Methodist Women's local, district and conference meetings;
- • Exploring the faith imperatives relevant to these realities through Bible study and worship;
- • Opening dialogues on these realities across lines of race and economic status;
- • Partnering with immigrant and refugee rights organizations;
- • Supporting justice action for immigrants, refugees and migrants, with special concern for the needs of women, children and youth;
- • Promoting immigrants' access to education, health care, and safety from violence and economic exploitation.
United Methodist Women members accepted the challenge, engaging biblical reflections, advocacy action and outreach to immigrants in their communities.
