Cote d’Ivoire Net Distribution
November 11-15, 2008
Nearly a million nets—enough to provide one to every participating family with a child under five in each of the 18 civil districts in Côte d’Ivoire —will be distributed Nov. 11-15, 2008, in this West African nation where malaria is among the top killers of children under five years old.
The distribution involves more than 750 United Methodist volunteers from the Côte d’Ivoire and Texas Annual Conferences. The covenant relationship between the two conferences initiated this effort which has led to the net distribution. A contribution of more than $1 million from the Texas Annual Conference was multiplied many times over with additional contributions from the United Nations Foundation.
The nets were purchased through the UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets Campaign and volunteers received basic malaria education training through UMCOR Health’s Malaria Control program.
