UMCOR Water Projects
Water Project Highlights
Ministry with the Poor Model Project, Democratic Republic of Congo
Through the “Integrated Sustainable Agriculture-Health Program (SA&H)” in the Kamina Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), UMCOR is working to improve overall community health through increased food consumption, access to potable water and the development of a community-based primary healthcare program at Shungu Memorial Center.
The SA&H project leverages a local network of volunteer community health workers to strengthen the capacity of clinic teams at Shungu. Community health workers receive improved health care, learn innovative farming techniques, and access clean water. UMCOR is working to create new potable water sources that use bio-sand filters, wells, and water catchments. UMCOR also teaches sustainable farming skills to the community health workers and their families which creates self-sufficiency.
Nyadire United Methodist Mission, ZImbabwe
Thousands of people living in the northeast sector of Zimbabwe depend on the life enabling services of the UMCOR-supported Nyadire United Methodist Mission. The mission, which has a long history of exceptional ministry including a 200-bed hospital, primary and secondary schools, teaching college, nursing college, orphanage, and farm, lacks one basic commodity—a dependable supply of clean water. Without an effective water supply, Nyadire cannot respond to the extreme health and disease crisis that continues in Zimbabwe. Water is critical to Nyadire’s future.
UMCOR is working to renovate existing boreholes, storage reservoirs, and distribution piping that will provide Nyadire safe water throughout the mission complex which serves the people of Nyadire and surrounding regions.
Tengecha Community Water Project
In Tengecha, Kenya, a rural community of approximately 20,000 people, women spend their days and nights walking to and from their homes carrying water from the Mara River, located about 6.7 kilometers away from their home. The river water is contaminated and is frequently used by roaming livestock. Family members take turns retrieving water so they can prepare meals for their families or do other household chores. Children often leave school two or three hours earlier to begin the long journey to the river. UMCOR is helping Tengecha construct two well functioning boreholes to serve all its members.
