RECONSTRUCTION
Aceh Housing and Infrastructure (HIRTAC) 2005-2008
UMCOR expanded the impact of previously awarded funds by combining savings with new funding to implement a housing and infrastructure project in Banda Aceh municipality and the Aceh Besar district. This project allowed at least 60 tsunami-affected families to move out of temporary living centers into high quality permanent houses connected to basic public services that were built by UMCOR.
In November 2007, UMCOR completed construction of a community center for Bandur Baru community, which is located in Banda Aceh City. After the completion of the community center, the local community wrote a letter to UMCOR and expressed their gratitude. Soon after construction completion, the community organized meetings, events and trainings in the new community center. Previously, the community center was unusable, as it was damaged by the Tsunami.
In February 2008, 36 Tsunami affected families moved into their new homes. The beneficiaries were very pleased to receive their homes and jointly inspected their houses with UMCOR Engineers before handover. In August 2008, the final 24 HIRTAC houses were completed and beneficiaries moved into their new homes. Through the HIRTAC project, 60 Tsunami affected households have now received well built homes that are connected to electricity and have water supply.
Integrated Rehabilitation of Tsunami Affected Communities (IRTAC) 2005-2007
The IRTAC project helped 524 families in Bireuen District, Aceh Province, whose homes were either damaged or lost in the tsunami. Through this program, UMCOR repaired 91 damaged houses and reconstructed 433 destroyed homes, including obtaining land and building new permanent homes for 65 families without land prior to the tsunami. All of these homes were provided water and sanitation facilities and were linked to the electrical network.
UMCOR also improved the infrastructure of these communities by building drainage channels and roads. UMCOR worked closely with communities in the participating villages to jointly identify and select small-scale infrastructure projects of most importance to the villagers. With the savings achieved in this project, UMCOR Indonesia rehabilitated two water purification plants, part of the local water distribution network, which served communities across two sub-districts in Bireuen.
UMCOR Indonesia worked closely with the five participating villages to facilitate their active participation in shelter reconstruction, infrastructure rehabilitation, and income generation activities through community development committees. This integrated approach allowed a variety of community needs to be addressed through a single project while also simultaneously expanded the impact of UMCOR Indonesia's interventions.
Integrated Support for Improved Temporary Accommodation Center (ISITAC) 2006-2007
In Aceh Besar District, Aceh Province, UMCOR worked closely with families whose homes were destroyed in the tsunami and who were living in two temporary living centers until they could find permanent housing. Short-term reconstruction work included making repairs and improving the water and sanitation facilities at the centers.
UMCOR built 70 permanent houses for families who have been living at the two centers. Each house had proper water and sanitation facilities and was connected to the local electrical network.
Throughout this project, UMCOR coordinated with other NGOs working in the same communities to prevent duplication of effort by providing assistance that was complementary to other ongoing projects or by filling identified gaps.
EDUCATION
School Reconstruction in Banda Aceh Town (SRiBAT) 2006-2007
The earthquake and tsunami wiped out 176 of 278 primary schools in the Banda Aceh District and damaged 56 others. UMCOR Indonesia identified four small primary school buildings in Banda Aceh Town that were damaged by the earthquake for assistance. The buildings were structurally unsafe, without water supply, and prone to flooding. UMCOR Indonesia consolidated the four schools into one earthquake-resistant two-story primary school that now provides a safe learning environment for over 450 students and their teachers. The reconstructed school has water and sanitation facilities, classroom equipment, such as desks and chairs, playground and sports equipment.
INCOME GENERATION
Sustainable Income Generation in Aceh (SIGA) 2005-2008
UMCOR completed this project, which enabled tsunami survivors in two villages of Aceh Province to operate successful, sustainable business and to support themselves and their families through a program funded by the American Baptist Churches, USA. This project is benefited entrepreneurs in Kuala Raja and Cot Batee villages of Bireuen District, providing more than 120 people with business skills training for fishery management, livestock husbandry and agricultural production and over 210 families with inputs to launch successful businesses. UMCOR Indonesia also improved the capacity of local community groups so that the gift of livelihoods assistance can be multiplied to help additional people beyond the life of this project.
Integrated Rehabilitation of Tsunami Affected Communities (IRTAC) 2005-2007
UMCOR Indonesia helped 474 entrepreneurs who lost their livelihood as a result of the December 2004 earthquake and tsunami to generate a sustainable income in Bireuen District. A business skills course helped 448 people learn more about how to start, grow, and sustain a business. UMCOR Indonesia also provided income generation assistance to 256 beneficiary groups to help establish new or re-establish previous livelihoods by providing business related inputs such as fishing equipment, farming implements, and small livestock. Technical consultants offered additional training for beneficiaries related to their particular business sector.
All income generation recipients agreed to repay 25% of the value of the package they received from UMCOR to other vulnerable persons in their village. For example, income generation beneficiaries in the village of Kuala Raja provided in-kind repayments in the form of rice to vulnerable members of their community.
Integrated Support for Improved Temporary Accommodation Center (ISITAC) 2006-2007
UMCOR Indonesia is provided small income generation start-up packages to 100 families in Aceh Besar District, including the 70 families that received permanent houses from UMCOR and 30 additional vulnerable families in the same communities. UMCOR worked closely with beneficiaries to provide packages that addressed their needs and business preferences.
HEALTH
Integrated Support for Improved Temporary Accommodation Center (ISITAC) 2006-2007

UMCOR's doctor visited the centers regularly to provide medical check-ups and free medicine for beneficiaries living in this difficult environment. UMCOR's nutritionist also visited regularly to consult with beneficiaries. Food and nutrition packages, including packages geared specifically for pregnant and lactating mothers and for small children, were distributed to families in the temporary living centers.
