INCOME GENERATION

Livelihoods Revitalization 2004-2005

UMCOR sought to improve overall food security and livelihoods of framing families in the Katanga province through this program. This was accomplished by constructing an agricultural training center in Kamina, and an agricultural classroom annex in Mulungunwshi as well as implementing a sustainable development project in Mulungunwshi and installing an internet system at the United Methodist campus in Mulungunshi.

River Boat Project 2004-2005

UMCOR contracted local craftsmen to construct fishing boats for teams of fishermen who have recently returned to Pweto after spending years as refugees in Zambia or displaced elsewhere in Congo. Additionally, UMCOR assisted by the USAID Office of Transition Initiatives, renovated the United Methodist Church's Riverboat, which is used to ferry medical supplies and other desperately needed goods up the Congo River into the interior of the country, which has been cut off from supply lines for years because of war.

WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT

Girls' Scholarship Program 2003-2005

Education for Development and Democracy Initiative (EDDI) Girls Scholarship Program began in 2003 in the Katanga Province for 1,500 girls in 38 schools in Lubumbashi, Kasumbalesa and Pweto. UMCOR then implemented a program funded by the African Education Initiative in 52 schools.

The projects provided access to education for vulnerable girls and included tuition, school supplies and uniforms. Over a three year period approximately 90% of the girls stayed in school and were promoted to the next class or grade. Moreover, the communities were incorporated into the project through selection committees and the mentoring process.
