HEALTH
Humanitarian Assistance
UMCOR is working to improve the nutritional diet and basic living conditions of internally displaced and institutionalized people through distributions of food and supplies such as health kits and school kits. The program directly benefits 390 internally displaced families (approximately 1,500 people) and 910 vulnerable people living in state institutions who are mostly elderly or children.
Assistance to Refugees and Asylum Seekers 2001-2006
UMCOR Azerbaijan implemented the Assistance to Refugees and Asylum Seekers project in cooperation with UNHCR. The project provided refugees and asylum seekers in Azerbaijan with free primary health care and basic medicines, as well as referrals to specialists and hospitalization if needed. An additional component to the program was added in 2003 to better combat and treat tuberculosis within this vulnerable population. Under this program, UMCOR Azerbaijan also provided monthly financial assistance to the most vulnerable asylum seekers and refugee families to be used for rent, food, and clothing.
Dental Care for Refugees and Asylum Seekers 2005-2006
The concluded Dental Care for Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Azerbaijan project provided over 700 patients with dental treatment, and trained some 1,400 adult refugees and asylum seekers and over 5,000 children in oral hygiene.
HIV/AIDS
Family Planning and Reproductive Health 2003-2005
The Family Planning and Reproductive Health Program sought to improve the reproductive health knowledge and practices of married women, men and adolescents in four districts of Azerbaijan. During the project, UMCOR Azerbaijan trained nearly 400 peer educators, who conducted health training on preventing sexually transmitted diseases and family planning techniques in 59 communities for over 76,000 participants. UMCOR Azerbaijan also held several health festivals and conducted information, education and communication campaigns to further educate the public about family planning and reproductive health.
EDUCATION AND INCOME GENERATION
Skills Training 2007
UMCOR is trained 108 internally displaced and 12 disabled women in trades such as hairdressing, baking, sewing, handicrafts, and other skills so they can earn an income to support themselves and their families. UMCOR then encouraged the women to share what they have learned with others, thus multiplying the effort.
Skills Training 2003 - 2006
The skills training program assisted 446 women from Afghanistan, Chechnya, Iran and Iraq have completed vocational training in hairdressing, cooking, sewing, computer literacy and other coursework to enable them to earn an income in their final destination countries.
CIVIL SOCIETY AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Ambassador's Fund Programs 2006-2007
UMCOR operated programs supported by the US Ambassador's Fund that provided needed assistance to refugees in Azerbaijan. The programs included training community volunteers in preventive health care, assisting unaccompanied minors living as refugees in Azerbaijan, and helping refugee communities to organize to meet their own needs.
