AGRICULTURE

Farmer Organizations 2003-2008

Nine Farmer Organizations were established through the Farmer Organizations Support Program in Armenia (FOSPA). This agriculture development program helps local farmers to work together to reach a greater share of the market through these organizations. Additionally, the Farmer Organizations provide farmers with agricultural support services and improved ability to access credit. FOSPA provides economic benefits for farmers, but also promotes civil society by fostering the growth of non-governmental organizations and community development initiatives.

Strengthening the Role of women in Agricultural Cooperatives 2007-2008

UMCOR is strengthened the role of women involved in agriculture by integrating them into leadership roles in farmer organization management. In the rural communities of Ararat, Armavir and Vayots Dzor marzes, UMCOR provided training for both male and female cooperative members as well as female community members, including farmers’ wives and female heads of households on leadership, gender, women's empowerment, the role of women in society, auditing, cooperative management, marketing, farm and financial management.

Demonstration Farms 2004-2005

Two central and three satellite training facilities with dairy cattle, pig and sheep-breeding and hen-laying were set up to give farmers hands-on experience in new techniques. Through this program 1,332 farmers were trained in all aspects of crop and animal husbandry. The demonstration farms also provided for vulnerable members of surrounding communities by donating the 6,727 kg of cheese, nine heifers, numerous vegetable seeds, and 23,710 vegetable seedlings produced by these farms.

HEALTH

Childhood Illnesses 2004-2006

The Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) program trained primary healthcare providers in treating the most prevalent diseases in children under five-years of age. Through this program, health facilities were improved and community knowledge strengthened to improve child health. 480 health care providers in three regions of Armenia were trained in managing childhood diseases according to the IMCI strategy.

Strengthening Public Health Education in the Republic of Armenia 2003-2005

This program trained Armenian leaders and public health professionals in practical approaches to public health education. This program consisted of a three week U.S. based training for seven government and non-governmental organization officials, two in-country workshops to discuss public health priorities in Armenia, and a project to design informative public health materials.

INCOME GENERATION

Dairy Processors 2005-2007

UMCOR Armenia is encouraging dairy plants to engage in corporate social responsibility. In exchange for donations of dairy products, which are distributed to institutions for vulnerable Armenians, dairy plants are provided grants for equipment upgrades and training in improved business practices, enabling their businesses to grow. In this way, a network of successful local businesses serving local needs is being established.
