Marc S. Maxi Named New Executive Director for UMCOR NGO
NEW YORK, NY, Feb. 16, 2006-Marc S. Maxi began his work as Executive Director for the United Methodist Committee on Relief Non-Governmental Organization this week.
Mr. Maxi had been UMCOR NGO's Regional Operations Director for Africa and the Caribbean since July 2004. "I am honored to serve this agency that has a 65-year history of humanitarian service," said Mr. Maxi. "I welcome being part of its future."
Mr. Maxi is an international development expert and peace negotiator. His work as the Regional Director for Africa and the Caribbean touched a constellation of activities that bear witness to complex politics, conflicts, and infrastructure needs in developing countries. Recently he led the negotiation that resulted in UMCOR's startup in South Darfur, Sudan. Prior to joining UMCOR, Mr. Maxi had more than 10 years of field experience and worked for American Red Cross, Africare, and the United Nations. "Striving to improve the human condition is often a difficult task," says Mr. Maxi. "But I take great satisfaction and pleasure in knowing that every little bit that I do is improving the life of many around the world."
Mr. Maxi holds an M.A. in International Relations and Comparative Government from Saint John's University in New York and a B.S. in Public Administration from Northeastern University in Boston. He is fluent in several languages.
UMCOR's international operations encompass field offices in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. Public works, shelter, health, income generation, counter-trafficking, demobilization, and retraining of former combatants, camp management, and microfinance are among the agency's core sectors. UMCOR is the humanitarian service agency of The United Methodist Church. Its mission is to alleviate human suffering-whether caused by war, conflict or natural disaster, with open hearts and minds to all people.
