South Asia Emergency, # 274305
The massive earthquake that struck off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, on December 26, 2004, created a tsunami that left upwards of 200,000 people dead or missing and at least 1 million more displaced. The waves left coastal swathes completely destroyed to depths of three miles in countries on all sides of the Indian Ocean.
To respond to this far-reaching catastrophe, UMCOR established field offices for long term relief and development in Indonesia and Sri Lanka, the two hardest-hit countries. UMCOR also worked with local partners in Somalia, Thailand, and India to provide assistance and recovery these tsunami-affected areas. UMCOR workers are supplying new nets and boats, beginning construction of new homes, cleaning wells polluted by saltwater that flooded inland in the tsunami.
We're 100% efficient. Every dollar you give to this emergency will provide humanitarian relief and recovery only for this emergency. That's because gifts to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering covers UMCOR's costs to administer your gifts.
