In Ethiopia 90 percent of the children suffer from malnutrition. UMCOR responded with emergency food and longer-term food security initiatives, cooperating with Jewish and other Christian relief groups.
Rehabilitation projects such as rebuilding homes and providing assistance in livelihoods, community capacity, and health programs. The earthquake that killed more than 17,000 people in 1999 was followed by several others.
The United Methodist Church (UMC) of Mozambique and the United States has work in all eleven provinces of Mozambique. UMCOR supports ongoing relief and recovery efforts from war, famine, and floods. Health issues, including HIV/AIDS, also have been an ongoing concern. Chicuque Hospital in Inhambane receives signifcant United Methodist support.
UMCOR funds have provided food, warm winter clothing, and heating fuel for children in orphanages who continue to suffer from the famine.
UMCOR planned a five-year response to the emergency caused by Hurricane Mitch and Hurricane Georges.
World Trade Center/Pentagon Disaster
With funds from a generously supported appeal, UMCOR provided direct aid for several years to families and individuals impacted by the events of September 11, and continued to respond until April 2006 through implementing partners in two annual conferences.
Rehabilitation of homes and lives continues in the several regions affected by this devastating 2003 storm.
