A major earthquake shook Yogyakarta, on the Indonesian island of Java, in the dawn hours of Saturday, May 27, 2006. More than 5,000 people were killed and 200,000 left homeless in the 6.3 quake with hundreds of thousands injured and many more are left homeless. Eighty percent of the nearby town of Bantul was destroyed by the quake and its multiple aftershocks.
UMCOR partners are providing relief to earthquake survivors. Through ACT International, an international disaster response coalition, UMCOR is supporting the efforts of local organizations and Church World Service that are assisting more than 30,000 survivors. They are providing shelter, water, health services, psychosocial assistance, and advocacy.
