Hurricanes 2004, Grenada, UMCOR Advance #982410
Hurricane Ivan's 120 to 145 mph winds and rains battered the island nation of Grenada for 10 hours in September 2004. This powerful storm killed 39 people and left thousands homeless. Eighty percent of the island's infrastructure was demolished or significantly damaged as well as most of the crops. A year later, Ivan was still in the forefront of people's memories and conversations. Hurricane Emily arrived in July 2005 causing further damage and hampering reconstruction efforts already in progress.
UMCOR opened a field office in Grenada in late 2005 that is working with local partners and assisting in the recovery process.
