Voices from Haiti: Johnny
June 26, 2010—Johnny, a father of three children, is a driver for UMCOR Haiti. He hopes to one day become a doctor. Before the January 12 earthquake, he was studying biology and his tuition was supported by a pastor in the United States. After the earthquake, his school closed and he has put his education on hold. Because their house is too damaged to live in, Johnny and his family are living in a tent. It was important that he be closer to home to help his wife care for their children. He had work teaching biology and English, but those jobs kept him away from home too much. Working as a driver for UMCOR gives him the flexibility and financial support to provide for his family in this difficult time. Johnny says that with one more month’s work, he will be able to begin repairing his house.
