UMCOR Indonesia Launches Second Phase of Income Generation Program

May 6, 2010—UMCOR Indonesia launched the second phase of its post-tsunami income generation program. The program will build upon earlier relief efforts and strengthen the sustainability of community livelihoods and welfare by establishing cooperatives.

The new phase of UMCOR’s Integrated Sustainable Development in Aceh (ISDA) project was initiated April 13 with the first of a series of training sessions designed to increase participants’ understanding of how cooperatives work.

The training targets the most motivated and committed beneficiaries of earlier income generation projects in Aceh Besar and Bireuen Districts. It will help participants and their communities learn to effectively manage cooperatives, develop cooperative businesses, and support the household businesses of co-op members.

UMCOR hired LAPENKOP, a national training institution focused on cooperatives, to conduct the training for a total of 192 beneficiaries from eight villages, divided into four groups. LAPENKOP will facilitate the formation and eventual registration of the groups into legal cooperatives. Once the co-ops are structured and leaders elected, LAPENKOP will then offer specialized training sessions on management, bookkeeping and computer technology.

This new phase of UMCOR Indonesia’s income generation program follows several years of post-tsunami livelihood rejuvenation efforts.  Income generation assistance was among the top priorities identified by most families after the 2004 tsunami.

Through projects supported by funding from the United Methodist Church’s General Board of Global Ministries, the American Red Cross, and the American Baptist Churches, UMCOR Indonesia has provided business skills training, income generation packages, and technical skills training to more than 1,500 beneficiaries.
