US: FLOOD NEEDS CONTINUE
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) continues to work with United Methodist annual conferences in the Northeast, impacted by flooding caused by Hurricane Irene and compounded by Tropical Storm Lee.
In New York, UMCOR grants are helping to provide for initial relief and recovery needs. In the Upper New York Conference, volunteer reception centers are being set up to help connect survivors with resources, services, and programs needed to begin their long road to recovery.
Cleaning buckets are in high demand as parts of the region have continued to experience flooding in recent weeks. It costs approximately $55 to assemble a cleaning bucket, which helps a family clean their home after disasters such as floods. Learn more.
One hundred percent of your gift to US Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #901670, goes to support UMCOR’s response to disasters in the United States. Earmark your check “Hurricanes 2011” to support recovery brought on by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.
US: TEXAS WILDFIRES
More than 1,550 homes have been consumed by wildfires in Texas in recent weeks. Even as firefighters work to bring the last of those fires under control, UMCOR is providing support to the affected communities.
Southwest Texas Annual Conference is deploying and certifying Early Response Teams (ERTs) to help communities in the first stages of recovery. They are also working to ensure that at least one member of each ERT is trained in providing spiritual and emotional support for disaster survivors.
Central Texas Annual Conference also is responding to those in need by providing supplies such as food, clothing, hygiene kits, water, diapers, and other supplies.
Your gift to US Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #901670 helps UMCOR to respond effectively to the wildfires when you earmark your check “Wildfires 2011”.
REFUGEES: WELCOMING REFUGEES IN BUFFALO, NY
Christ United Methodist Church (CUMC) near Buffalo, New York, has been welcoming refugee families from countries all over the globe since 1999.
CUMC has sponsored a construction worker and a champion swimmer from Bosnia, an entrepreneur and an advocate for women and children from Sudan, a Bantu family from Somalia, a mechanic and a seamstress from Myanmar, a philosophy professor from Cuba, and a high school math teacher and an engineer from Iraq.
Members of the congregation have guided these families and formed lasting friendships. Most of the families have stayed in the Buffalo area and are helping to rebuild the community.
By answering Christ’s call to welcome the stranger, CUMC gives these families opportunities they would not have in their home countries or refugee camps, and strengthens communities so that all may live in God’s abundance. Learn more about how you or your church can be involved in refugee ministry.
Your gift to New Hope for Newcomers, UMCOR Advance #901779, supports this valuable ministry.
FAIR TRADE: SHARE FOR HUNGER
Help share the good word about fair trade by participating in UMCOR and Equal Exchange’s Share for Hunger program.
For the rest of the year, when you refer another congregation to Equal Exchange to purchase fairly traded coffee, tea, cocoa, and other goods, $10 will be given to UMCOR’s Hunger & Poverty Program. In addition, new congregations will receive 10% off their first order.
To participate in the program, refer another congregation to the Equal Exchange website or call 774-776-7366 for their order. When they make the order, they should enter “REF11” as the promotion code and provide the name of the referring congregation.
One great reason to purchase fairly traded goods this fall is to take part in the annual Reverse Trick or Treat campaign in which children help raise awareness about unfair practices and forced child labor in the chocolate industry. Learn more.
