TEXAS: FIGHTING FIRES
Over the past week and across the state, the Texas Forest Service has responded to a total of 172 fires burning more than 135,000 acres.
“I know, from our conversations with conference personnel, that volunteers are out providing what assistance they can,” said the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) US Disaster Response executive, Rev. Tom Hazelwood. “UMCOR is prepared to resource the conferences and respond to the needs of survivors,” he added.
In Bastrop County, 25 miles east of Austin, in the Southwest Texas Conference, fires have charred some 45 square miles. The Texas Forest Service indicated that 785 homes were completely destroyed there, bringing the total number of homes ruined to date in this disaster to 1,023. UMCOR has provided an emergency grant to the Southwest Texas Conference.
“We offer prayers for those who have lost so much because of the drought and fires in Texas,” Hazelwood said. He indicated that UMCOR deployed a disaster response consultant to Bastrop County last Friday. Read more.

US: FLOODING CONTINUES
Out of 11 districts in the Susquehanna Annual Conference, eight are severely affected by flooding after heavy rainfalls from Tropical Storm Lee caused rivers, creeks, and streams to overflow their banks, said Larry Siikanen, Conference Disaster Response Coordinator. “I have two words to describe the situation here: Extremely Bad ,” Siikanen said.
UMCOR had just supplied the Susquehanna Conference with an Emergency grant to facilitate the response to Tropical Storm Irene. Those funds will be used to acquire equipment, such as power washers, and to enable the disaster response consultants to reach those most in need across the conference.
Given the widespread effects of this round of flooding due to Tropical Storm Lee, not only for the Susquehanna Conference but, also, for the Upper New York, New York, and Greater New Jersey conferences, it is likely that there will be need for additional support. Learn more.
UMCOR is asking for cleaning bucket donations at this time. They are in great demand with the number of floods in recent weeks. You can help those who have been impacted by Tropical Storm Lee with your gift to US Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #901670. Please earmark your check “Hurricanes 2011.”
SOMALIA: HELPING CHILDREN THROUGH THE FAMINE
As the famine continues to rage in the Horn of Africa, UMCOR is working to provide relief throughout the region. In a recent effort, UMCOR is partnering with International Blue Crescent to provide milk, vegetables, and other nutritional supplements to 1,000 children living in Somali camps.
UMCOR is also supporting partners in Kenya, Djibouti, and Ethiopia to bring relief. Your gift to International Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #982450 will help support these efforts. Please designate your gift to “Horn of Africa Crisis.”
HAITI: PASSING ON THE GIFT
Madame Marie Therese received goats through UMCOR’s agriculture program in Haiti in partnership with Projet d’Assistance Urgente d’Agriculture (PAUA). The program reached out to 1,600 vulnerable families and focuses on livestock and grain distribution in six of the most difficult places to access in Haiti.
Mme. Therese and her husband chose to raise goats instead of growing crops due to the difficult access to water. They use the milk from the goats, and also breed them to sustain themselves and others in their village.
She said that without this program, she is not sure how she and her husband would have survived. Neither could work after the earthquake, and they struggled to meet day-to-day needs.
Mme. Therese said was looking forward to the day when she would “pass on the gift” to another family in need.
A component of PAUA is that recipients of livestock and grain are required to give a percentage of seed harvested or livestock produced to others in their community—thus keeping the program going and changing the lives of neighbors, friends, and loved ones.
